When Mariah Carey started acting in 2001 nobody was excited about it. Her first film, the semi-autobiographical Glitter, and the soundtrack accompanying it were both failures. It even won her a Razzie Award for Worst Actress. But Mariah didn’t quit acting. She began taking professional acting lessons and has starred in many movies after Glitter. A year after Glitter she partnered Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters in the independent WiseGirls where they portray waitresses.
The next years provided Carey with lots of work. Death of a Dynasty, another independently produced movie, Tennessee, an indie film, and State Property 2, as well as a few appearances at TV series such as Ally McBeal were among her roles. Mariah Carey was featured in Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
Her work in Tennessee got good reviews but probably her latest movie, the 20009 Precious will be her true breakthrough as an actress. The movie is an adaptation of Sapphire novel called Push. Carey’s character is a social worker dealing with a troubled teenager in 1980s Harlem, New York. The famous diva is unrecognizable without her make up and special outfits. She gave up her image to portray Mrs. Weiss and so far it seems the sacrifice was worth it. Her acting garnered positive reviews from critics and the movie has already won awards at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.
Apparently the singer famous for hits such as “Without You,” “Hero,” “Against All Odds,” and many other number-one hits, as well as her marriage – and later divorce – with Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, now has sorted a few things of her personal life as well. In 2008 she wed actor Nick Cannon in a secret ceremony and currently claims her wholehearted happiness.
2010 will also bring a lot of travelling for Mariah as she already is in the midst of her "Angels Advocate Tour” in New York at New Year’s Eve. We eagerly expect Mariah’s next projects. This time, unprejudiced.
